What exactly is Domain Authority?

Domain Authority (DA) is a Moz-developed search engine ranking score that predicts how likely a website is to rank on search engine result pages (SERPs). A Domain Authority score varies from one to one hundred, with higher scores indicating a greater ability to rank.

Domain Authority is determined by combining multiple variables, such as linking root domains and total connection count, into a single DA ranking. This score can then be used to compare websites or monitor a website's "ranking power" over time. Domain Authority is not a metric that Google uses to determine search rankings and has no impact on the SERPs.

How Do You Determine Domain Authority?

Domain Authority can be determined using Moz's Link Explorer, the MozBar (Moz's free SEO toolbar), or the SERP Analysis section of Keyword Explorer. Domain Authority metrics are also used in all Moz Pro campaigns and the Moz API. Domain Authority metrics are used in hundreds of SEO and online marketing tools all over the internet.

What constitutes a "strong" Domain Authority?

Sites with a large number of high-quality external links (such as Wikipedia or Google.com) are generally at the top of the Domain Authority scale, while small businesses and websites with less inbound links can have a much lower DA score. New websites will still have a Domain Authority score of one.

In general, a low domain authority score ranges from 0 to 20. Anywhere between 20 and 30 is fine, and anywhere between 30 and 50 is excellent. It's very good when your score is in the 50-60 range, and if you've cleared that and are in the 60-100 range, you've got an outstanding domain authority score. To get to the 60-100 zone, keep in mind that building your connection profile is the most important factor to consider, as it will benefit your domain authority in the long run. Always strive for the highest quality connections rather than the most links.

How is Domain Authority scored?

Domain Authority is rated on a 100-point logarithmic scale. As a result, raising the score from 20 to 30 is much easier than increasing it from 70 to 80.

What Is the Importance of Domain Authority?

Domain authority is a simple way to comprehend how Google rates websites. Google's ranking algorithms and how they determine which websites will rank for which keywords remain a mystery. Google discloses best practices and ranking factors but never reveals how each website is ranked.

Domain authority is the most reliable representation of the search results environment and is essential for understanding why some websites rank higher than others. Higher DA sites outperform lower DA sites. As a result, there is a clear connection between high DA scores and higher rankings.

How to Increase Your Domain Authority

It takes time to establish authority when you first register a domain. Many factors are critical, such as proper on-page SEO, ensuring your website's content is of high quality, keeping your site mobile-friendly, and not forgetting your site's loading speed.

However, your relation profile is the most important factor in increasing your DA. In reality, the domain authority score can be thought of as a measurement of how good (or weak) your relation profile is. Backlinks are Google's number one ranking factor. Although there are over 200 ranking criteria, a good connection profile is the most significant in increasing search traffic and ranking your site.

As a result, it stands to reason that the most important element in increasing the domain authority is also backlinks. Although this is not always the case, it is fair to assume that the stronger your relation profile, the higher your Domain Authority.

  • Access links from websites with a large Domain Authority

Obtaining backlinks from high domain authority websites will help you improve not only your domain authority but also your page authority. And there are numerous methods for obtaining authoritative backlinks in order to expand your connection profile. For one thing, guest blogging is an excellent way to do this. In essence, you're swapping a piece of content for a backlink. The higher the Domain Authority of that website, the better the backlink and the more link "juice" the website passes into your own.

  • Eliminate or minimize spammy links

It's not all about obtaining high-quality backlinks. It's also necessary to avoid having a lot of spammy websites to connect to you if you want to keep your domain authority high. Google has become better at ignoring spammy links rather than penalizing websites for them in terms of rankings. However, it's still important to clean up your link profile on a regular basis by conducting a link audit, manually deleting spam links, or disavowing them.

  • Access links from legitimate websites

There are people nowadays who fabricate domain authority ratings. Yes, it's true, and people do it all the time (mostly to deceitfully sell backlinks on their websites for a higher price than they're worth). Furthermore, several websites exist that have a strong historical connection profile but have been dormant for many years. They might also have expired if the owner has stopped working on them. Some SEOs will purchase domains like these and create a network of websites with high domain authority but little traffic, then establish links to their own websites that they want to rank.  This should be frowned upon as it is a bad practice. Google and tools like Moz are getting better at spotting these types of websites and devaluing them. As a result, the amount of traffic that the linking website receives is now a significant indicator of a good correlation.

Since Domain Authority is intended to predict a site's ability to rank, making a very high DA score should not be your only target. Examine the DA ratings of the places you're directly competing within the SERPs and strive to outperform them. It works better as a comparative metric (rather than an absolute, specific score) when conducting research in search results and evaluating which sites have more powerful/important connection profiles than others. Since it is a comparison tool, there is no such thing as a "good" or "poor" Domain Authority ranking. Your domain authority is also a good way to evaluate your SEO efforts and equate the strength of your website to the websites of your competitors.
