As a little boy, my dad had a Honda Barley Motorcycle. As a child who used to have the pleasure and unbridled joy of being given a ride to school on it; there was only one brand of motorcycle in the world: the Honda Motorcycle.
To me, all motorcycles had to be a Honda; it didn’t cross my mind that there could be other brands of motorcycles in the world. Even when it became obvious that there were other motorcycle brands like Yamaha, Suzuki, etc., the pride I felt about my father’s brand of motorcycle made me believe that others were all inferior to the Honda motorcycles.
Of course, today I know better! Not just about the brands of motorcycles that there are; but also the types and their qualities, among other things. It is important to have insightful information about this form of the automobile because riding one can be intimidating; especially to those taking on the adventure of riding one for the first time. This is why this article is about everything you need to know about motorcycles – Honda motorcycles or not.
1. Know Their types
There are quite several types of motorcycles to choose from, depending on how much you are ready to spend to get one; or looking for the one that suits your personality or style. The most common types of motorcycles include:
- Cruisers
- Dirt bikes
- Standard bikes
- Touring bikes
- Dual-purpose, and
- Sportbikes
Of the types listed above, the most common type is the standard motorcycles. This is probably because they are the most suitable for beginners who want to take on the adventure of motorcycle riding. Standard motorcycles are also fondly referred to as ‘Roadsters’ and have the benefit of being, perhaps, the cheapest of all the types of motorcycles in use in the world.
Although prices vary widely from place to place according to brand uniqueness; a decent standard motorcycle could come in the price range of between $1500 and $2000, and some as high as $7000. The most expensive of the lot comes from the stable of the Harley-Davidson manufacturers who has a six-cylinder customized motorcycle with a price tag of a whopping $1,000,000.
2. Who are the biggest Motorcycle Manufacturers in the World?
Motorcycles have been on roads across the world for many years now, and some of the motorcycle manufacturers have been around as long as one can trace back the history of the automobile industry. Consequently, a number of them have become so famous for their brand of motorcycles that their names are now synonymous with them. These manufacturers of reputable motorcycle brands include:
- Honda
- Yamaha
- Harley-Davidson
- Hero MotoCorp
- Bajaj Auto
The Honda and Yamaha brands are motorcycles made in Japan. Founded in 1959 and 1955 respectively; these two motorcycle manufacturers remain some of the most trusted names in the two-wheeler automobile industry. Honda, for instance, remains the largest producer of motorcycles in the world with its Kumamoto Factory Honda's sole motorcycle plant in Japan, and its key production base for its global operations.
The Hero MotoCorp was formerly a Joint Venture company between the Hero Group and the Honda Corporation of Japan. Now, autonomous as Hero MotoCorp; It is an Indian multinational corporation and the largest two-wheeler manufacturer in the world; manufacturing mostly motorcycles and scooters, founded in Dharuhera but headquartered in New Delhi, India.
Similarly, Bajaj Auto is an Indian multinational company and currently the world’s most valuable two-wheeler company and the largest three-wheeler manufacturer, based in Pune, Maharashtra.
The Harley-Davidson Inc motorcycle manufacturer was founded in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the United States in 1903 and was one of the only motorcycle manufacturing companies along with the Indian companies to survive the Great Depression era.
Renowned for its customization works; the company boasts of manufacturing and selling some of the most expensive motorcycles in the world. It is the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the United States, as well as the oldest motorcycle manufacturer with continuous production since its formation.
So, what makes motorcycles still relevant in a world that is today dominated by other forms of transportation? In the next article, we will take a look at the features of motorcycles and the necessary information that one should have if you wish to ride on them.
