Leadership and governance in UAE

The famous Guinness book of records was one of my go-to books back in my school days, it was one that always got me thrilled, and yet informative. As a teenager then, one of the things that delighted me and my friends while we hurriedly flip through the pages of the book was the richest man on earth [of course, we considered most beautiful woman as well]. 

The UAE [United Arab Emirates] always had someone there talking about their affluence, opulence, and lavish lifestyle. It became clear over time that the leadership was more of a dynasty, which solved many other riddles in my head.

Today, I will share with you more insight on the leadership and governance in the UAE, amongst other things.

While digging on this, Wikipedia best describes the leadership of The UAE as a federation composed of seven emirates: Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, Sharjah, and the Umm Al Quwain. 

Each emirate is led by a Sheikh, who together comprise the Federal Supreme Council, one of whom acts as President of the UAE.

Because the president is chosen from among the people, the government is known as a federal presidential elective monarchy.

Monarchy is a system ruled by a King/Queen for life unless abdication occurs.

Don’t get it twisted, the UAE is a country to the 7 great emirates that have leaders for each emirate. Although the country on its own has a president, however with the rulers of 7 emirates, they together make up the Federal Supreme Council. The individual emirate is independent of its functions to the national government.

The UAE is governed by 5 highly respected authorities, which are:

1. The Federal Supreme Council.

2. The Federal President and the Federal Vice President.

3. The Federal Cabinet.

4. The Federal National Council.

5. The Federal Judiciary.

Having listed the 5 authorities regarded in the UAE, the highest authority in the UAE is the Federal Supreme Council, according to the constitutional authority of the UAE.

The Federal Supreme Council is also the highest legislative and executive authority that is responsible for formulating policies and approving the federal laws.

Abdul Rahman Mohammed Al Oweis, the Minister of Health, currently governs the health sector in the UAE. 

While the Ministry of Health and Prevention is the overall umbrella of the UAE health government, they also implement healthcare policy with other ministries of state, as well as the private sectors both locally and globally. 

Considering that the UAE is divided into 7 Emirates, we have carefully further listed out each emirate’s rulers and the family they represent for a full grasp of knowledge.

The most popular megacity in the UAE is being ruled by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, from the family of the Al Maktoum.

Another popular Emirate being ruled by the Al Nahyan dynasty is Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi has timer been set on the map for its affluence and rich oil state, likewise its many travel destination by tourist.

Abu Dhabi’s current ruler is His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed.

Fujairah’s ruling leader is His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, from the Al Sharqi family.

From the family of the Al Nuaimi, Ajman is being ruled by His Highness Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi.

The Umm Al Quwain Emirate is currently being led by His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Rashid Al Mu’alla, from the lineage of Al Mualla.

Ras Al Khaimah Emirate is led by His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi.

This is one rich city that contributes over 7% of the GDP of the UAE. It has been known for its affluence as the cultural capital, which is also ruled by the family of Al Qasimi.

Sharjah’s current ruler is His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi.
