Putting out fires is arguably part of the business experience, and it might be impossible to ever remove that entirely from the process. However, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t try. There will be unpredictable issues that force you to respond, but there will be other times when a good deal of preparation could have allowed you to breeze right past what could have otherwise been problematic.
It’s a skill, and one that takes practice. However, over time, this could allow you to breeze past issues that might have your competitors scrambling.

Taking some time to research the current landscape around your business might also be transformative. This can lead to you accumulating knowledge regarding topics from a wide variety, without even knowing whether or not they’ll become issues. That can feel like a scattershot approach, but take cybersecurity for instance. It’s important for any business to stay safe in a digital capacity, but how exactly they do that is always dependent on the threats that they face. Knowing where to go to find the relevant information – such as an expert-driven cybersecurity report – can give you a concise rundown of exactly what you need to know. That puts you in a position to defend yourself adequately before your own cybersecurity ever becomes an issue.
Be Aware
It isn’t only external factors that you need to be aware of, you also need to have a thorough insight and understanding of your own inner-workings.
A lot of the time, you might even find it difficult to apply general business advice to your own brand due to the wildly different circumstances. Your team size, the individual skills and qualities of your team members, your business size, and your working structure are all relevant factors regarding how a problem affects you.
Sometimes, you might also find that the problem is coming from within. For example, the issue of a high staff turnover might be arising if your employees are leaving due to the conditions of your workplace, perhaps requiring you to begin amending the root cause of the issue for a more fundamental change.
A Calm Mindset
Getting lost in the details can distract from the more human response to negative situations arising in your business. It’s unrealistic not to expect there to be at least some degree of panic, and that’s okay, you shouldn’t feel incompetent for experiencing emotions like that. However, what is important is how you respond to that panic. In a leadership position, you have to be able to recognize that, accept it, and start thinking of solutions in a more practical way – others are going to be looking to you for support, after all.
It’s common to hear about all the different qualities that can be useful in business, but that doesn’t mean they’ll come naturally to you. Practicing how to calm yourself in a stressful situation can be useful here but in also many other situations throughout your life.
